Back in 1984...
... A young woman from the Catholic Workers stood up during a service at South Presbyterian Church in Dobbs Ferry, NY and spoke about the plight of the homeless and hungry poor of New York City. It didn’t take much convincing for “this small group of committed citizens” to respond to her impassioned speech and thus, the Midnight Run was born. These men, women, and teenagers made it their business to help ease the pain and fear and loneliness for those living on the streets of New York City, heading downtown on Tuesday nights to deliver not only hot soup, sandwiches, some clothing, blankets but themselves and their friendship to people who under no other circumstances would they ever have the opportunity to meet. In 1988, Hastings High School made their first Midnight Run and joined the ranks of what is now hundreds upon hundreds of volunteers. It is our monthly outreach that has changed the lives of the teenagers and adults who have joined us over the years, creating the friendships formed on those Saturday night experiences
What You need for your typical midnight Run:
Sandwiches:
If you've signed up for a midnight run you'll need to bring along 15 bagged meals. You can make any kind of sandwiches you want and add anything you'd like in the bags! You don't need to bring waters, we've got that covered.
Here's an example of a great bagged meal:
1 Ham or Turkey and Cheese Sandwich on hearty bread
A hard-boiled egg
Cookies or a candy bar
A small bottle of Water
A Napkin
A Nice Note!
A signed permission slip:
Once you've packed your sandwich bags make sure that you bring along a signed permission slip (valid for a whole year's worth of runs!)
Once you have those:
Show up at the Midnight Run storefront in Dobbs-Ferry (97 Main St, Dobbs-Ferry, NY 10522) - expect a late night! (Most runs will end around 11:30 to 12:30)
